Ken Grover – John Tyler Community College, John Palmer – Casa Grande Community College, and Madhuri Bapat – Chandler Gilbert Community College spent three weeks this summer participating in a MATEC/Motorola sponsored internship program at Motorola’s Semiconductor Products Group, Phoenix, AZ.  The internship program was designed to allow faculty the opportunity to gain first hand experience in a semiconductor manufacturing setting.

The primary objectives were to expose the faculty to the culture and technology of Semiconductor Manufacturing Industry and to promote its synthesis into the classroom.  A sampling of the intern activities include:  touring the process fab and other manufacturing facilities, attending team meetings and participating in hands-on activities including labs and demonstrations on equipment processes.   An industry mentor, assigned to each faculty, directed the summer experience.  The three-week experience culminated with each faculty intern completing an SMT curriculum module on a process observed during the internship. The faculty also developed career awareness brochures and marketing materials, to be utilized in their student recruitment efforts.

Our goal at MATEC is to expand summer intern offerings and increase the number of companies nationally that offer direct work experience programs.  On behalf of MATEC and the Faculty Interns, thank you John Hall and all the Motorola Staff.
