Instructional Design and Development of Modular Instruction

Sample Workshop Agenda

 

8:30 - 8:45 am

Introduction and overview of agenda

8:45 - 9:15 am

Designing competency-based instruction

(lecture overview on designing/developing instructional components followed by discussion, questions, and answers)

Objective:  Identify and describe the essential components of competency-based instruction.

9:15 - 9:45 am

Learning Activity Designs:  Choosing/designing the best type of activity to facilitate learning

(lecture/discussion on content presentation and strategies for providing practice that will prepare students for the workplace)

Objectives:

1)  Describe the attributes of different types of learning activities and associated advantages/disadvantages.

2)  Given a description of a particular target knowledge, skill, or attitude, identify the most appropriate type of learning activity.

9:45 - 10:00 am

Writing competency statements and learning objectives

(basic guidelines for describing a competency and writing objectives)

Objectives:

1)  State the components of a well-written learning objective.

2)  Describe attributes of each component of a learning objective.

3)  Distinguish between knowledge, skill, and attitude objectives.

10:00 - 10:15 am

Break

10:15 - 11:30 am

Guided Practice:  Participants write competency statement, knowledge and skill objectives, and choose a learning activity design for their assigned topics

Objectives:

1)  Write a competency statement for the assigned topic.

2)  Write knowledge objectives that meet stated requirements.

3)  Write skill objectives that meet stated requirements.

4)  Choose an appropriate type of learning activity as a function of the learning objectives (type of learning that must take place).

11:30 - 12:00 pm

Critique of teams' learning objectives and design

(teams present objectives and type of activity to be designed for feedback and discussion by other teams)

Objective:  Improve objectives written during previous activity.

12:00 - 1:00 pm

Lunch - at the workshop site

1:00 - 2:00 pm

Building the learning activity:  Part I

(introduction to the Learning Activity Template and completing the first portion of the template)

Objectives:

1)  Identify and explain the purpose of template components.

2)  Complete the first two pages of the template.

2:00 - 3:15 pm

Building the learning activity:  Part II

(lecture/discussion on the elements of an effective performance assessment and completing the rest of the learning activity template)

Objectives:

1)  Describe the purpose and requirements of a performance assessment.

2)  Complete the rest of the learning activity template.

3:15 - 3:30 pm

Break

3:30 - 4:30 pm

Critique and feedback on learning activities

(teams present completed learning activities to the group - discussion, group feedback, and revision of proposed learning activities)

4:30 - 5:00 pm

Completion of workshop evaluation and discussion and questions on any topics presented in the workshop
